Yakubané (CH)
Heavily influenced by polyrhythmic melodies from the Southern hemisphere ranging from afro-funk to Ethio jazz, Fribourg-based group Yakubané takes us on a journey into African musical culture without the pretense of labelling themselves as purists. Though the quintet claim to be the Tony Allen, Mulatu Astatke, or Bombino of this side of the world, they do not deny their European roots and their penchant for psychedelia. Their music, self-proclaimed as “astronomical transalpine afro groove,” is an endless and breathtaking adventure into the exotic unknown. Maybe this is the big trip that you were dreaming of taking this summer?
